Presenter: Leslie McGrath, MS, CRNP Nurse Practitioner, Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Summary: This discussion will center around breast cancer-related lymphedema of the upper extremity and our collaborative efforts at a large cancer treatment and research institution to screen, diagnose, and treat this debilitating condition.
Objectives:
- Using background, pathophysiology, and risk models for breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) , analyze the imperative to shift from an impairment-based model to a preventive, prospective surveillance approach.
- Identify and discuss modalities for both screening and diagnosing BCRL.
- Examine newer lymphatic microsurgical approaches to lymphedema and discuss ongoing clinical trials for lymphedema risk reduction.

About the presenter: Leslie joined the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Department at Memorial Sloan-Kettering as a Nurse Practitioner in 2019 in a role focused almost exclusively on the prevention and management of lymphedema. Prior to this role her background is in wound care and she has been a member of AAWC since 2011.
