Wound Diagnosis and Recognizing Atypical Wounds
Wednesday, September 1 at 8:00 PM ET
Register.

Optimal healing outcomes for patients with wounds is predicated on having an accurate diagnosis of wound etiology. Sometimes this requires the clinician to think outside the box, especially when the wound does not respond to standard care. This course will review the characteristics of the four most common wound types, and present pictures and case studies of many atypical wounds in the following categories: immune-mediated tissue injury, infected wounds, malignant wounds, and miscellaneous wounds. Medical and wound care recommended for the groups, in addition to standard wound care will be briefly discussed; however, the main focus is correct diagnosis and appropriate referrals.

Objectives
At the end of the presentation, the participant will be able to

  • Recognize the characteristics of the 4 typical wound etiologies (arterial, venous, pressure, and diabetic).
  • Recognize the characteristics of atypical wounds.
  • Diagnose an atypical wound and make the correct referral for disease management.
  • Adapt the plan of care for a patient with an atypical wound based upon the effects of an underlying disorder on the healing process.
