Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the status of health care today R/T EB Practice Guidelines, policies and procedures, regulations, standards of care
  • Discuss impaired skin integrity in the critically ill
  • Discuss the provision of care: Clinicians, nursing process, documentation, risk management, the litigation process and legal prevention strategies
  • Illustrate, through case studies and active participation, appropriate practices necessary to improve provision of patient care and legal prevention practices

Sandra Higelin, MSN, RN, CNS, CWCN, CLNC

Sandra Higelin, MSN, RN, CWCN, CLNC, is the owner of N.I.A. LLC,  Consulting Services.  As a Geriatric Clinical Nurse Specialist, a Certified Wound Care Nurse, and a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, she offers geriatric health care consultations, wound care consultations, patient advocacy services, and education programs in wound care and geriatric issues.  She also works as an Expert Witness in Elder Abuse litigation.

Sandra is an active member of the Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Association, has served on the WOCN education committee and was a past Education Coordinator for PCR. She is also active in the National Association of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, the Gerontological Nurses Association, and the Southern California Association for Health Care Risk Managers.   As a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, Sandra provides expert witness services to both plaintiff and defense attorneys across the nation.  She has vast experience in wound care prevention and management and is an experienced speaker, having done presentation on multiple wound care topics.  She is also the author of the Nursing Diagnosis ‘Adult Failure to Thrive’,  authored chapter 18, “ Pressure Ulcers, in the  “Gerontological Nursing Competencies For Care  3rd Edition, 2014” and Co-authored chapter 23, “Evaluating Forensic Cases in the Legal Nurse Consulting Principles  3rd Edition, 2010”.
